Adoption Therapy

Adoption creates a lifelong psychological experience — for everyone it touches.

Whether you were adopted, have adopted, or placed a child for adoption, the emotional complexity of that experience doesn't resolve on its own. Grief, identity questions, attachment, loss, and reunion — these are real, significant experiences that deserve real clinical attention.

Therapy for adult adoptees

Adult adoptees often arrive at therapy with questions about identity, belonging, and what it means to have been relinquished. These can be longstanding questions that resurface during life transitions, or more recent discoveries for late-discovery adoptees who learned the truth as adults.

Common themes include:

  • Identity and belonging — figuring out who you are across biological and adoptive family lines.
  • Grief for the birth family, the early life, or the story you were told versus what you've learned.
  • Attachment patterns and how early relinquishment may have shaped your relationships.
  • Search and reunion experiences, and the complicated feelings that follow.
  • Transracial adoption and the intersection of racial identity with adoptive family experience.

Therapy for adoptive parents

Adoptive parents navigate their own set of challenges: attachment difficulties, trauma history in their child, grief from infertility, and the complexity of raising a child whose story is not fully yours to tell. Individual therapy creates space to process this experience — separate from your role as a parent.

Therapy for birth parents

Placing a child for adoption is a loss that often carries decades of unresolved grief. Many birth parents have never had a space to fully process what that experience meant. Therapy can offer that.
