Therapy for Bipolar Disorder

A bipolar diagnosis changes how you understand yourself — and how you navigate everything else.

Managing bipolar disorder is more than medication. The psychological work of living with significant mood episodes, protecting your relationships, managing your career, and maintaining a sense of identity that isn't entirely defined by your diagnosis is real and ongoing. Therapy is one of the most effective supports for this work.

What therapy for bipolar disorder addresses

  • Understanding your own pattern. Bipolar disorder shows up differently for different people. Therapy helps you map your own early warning signs, triggers, and patterns — so you can respond earlier and more effectively.
  • The aftermath of episodes. Manic and depressive episodes often leave real wreckage — in relationships, finances, work, and self-image. Processing what happened, and repairing what can be repaired, is part of the work.
  • Identity and self-worth. Many people with bipolar disorder struggle with shame around the diagnosis and the impact of past episodes. Therapy creates space to build a stable sense of self that isn't held hostage to your worst moments.
  • Relationships. Living with bipolar disorder affects partners, family members, and close friends. Individual therapy helps you navigate those dynamics — communicating about your needs, repairing ruptures, and maintaining connection through difficult stretches.
  • Coordination with psychiatric care. Therapy and medication management work best together. We can work alongside your psychiatrist or prescriber as part of a coordinated approach to your care.

A note on scope

We work with adults who have a bipolar diagnosis and are medically stable, typically with psychiatric support in place. If you're in an active manic or mixed episode, or if medication management isn't yet established, we'll discuss what level of support makes the most sense.
