Family Conflict Therapy

Family relationships are some of the most complicated ones we have.

They come with history, obligation, and emotional weight that most other relationships don't carry. And unlike other relationships, you can't always walk away cleanly — or if you can, doing so comes with its own grief and social cost. Many adults find themselves cycling through the same painful dynamics with family members for years, unsure how to change the pattern or what they even want from it.

What brings adults to therapy around family conflict

  • Ongoing conflict with parents, siblings, or extended family that never seems to resolve
  • Navigating a family system with dysfunction, addiction, mental illness, or abuse in the background
  • Estrangement — either choosing to limit contact or cut off from family, or being on the receiving end of that
  • Feeling pulled between loyalty to your family and loyalty to yourself or your own household
  • The particular strain of difficult in-law dynamics on a marriage or partnership
  • Grief for the family relationship you wanted and didn't have
  • Processing the impact of your upbringing on who you've become as an adult

What individual therapy can do

Therapy won't fix your family. But it can help you get clear on what you want from those relationships, understand your own patterns within them, and make more deliberate choices about how much access and energy to give.

It also creates space to grieve — for relationships that aren't what you hoped, for dynamics that may never change, and for versions of connection you deserved and didn't receive.
