Trauma & EMDR Therapy in Oregon

Trauma lives in the body and the nervous system — not just in the stories we tell about it. If you find yourself reacting to the present as if the past is still happening, avoiding things that used to feel normal, or feeling disconnected from yourself or your life, you're not overreacting. You may be living with the effects of trauma.

What Trauma Can Look Like

Trauma doesn't always come from a single dramatic event. It can come from childhood experiences, chronic stress, harmful relationships, spiritual environments that caused lasting damage, accidents, loss, or any experience that overwhelmed your capacity to process at the time. Complex trauma — repeated experiences over time — is common and often harder to name.

Symptoms might include: intrusive memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, physical tension or pain, shame, or a persistent sense of being stuck.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy developed specifically for trauma. Rather than requiring you to narrate every detail of what happened, EMDR works by engaging the brain's natural processing system to help you metabolize difficult memories — so they lose their grip on the present. Research consistently shows EMDR to be effective for PTSD and complex trauma.

Patricia Schuetz, LMFT, is trained in EMDR and works with adults navigating trauma, PTSD, and complex histories.
